DANCE TWIRL SOLO CATEGORIES
Dance Twirl choreography should include continuous dance movements while twirling and be coordinated with the music. The routine must have combinations of foot work and body work with the baton. Creativity, musicality, and quality of movement are key components along with baton skills. UIL routines with an emphasis on dance are appropriate for this category.
1 Baton Dance Twirl
A contestant performing a dance twirl using one baton throughout the entire routine. The performance is accompanied by music of the contestant’s preference.
2 Baton Dance Twirl
A contestant performing a dance twirl using two batons during all or any portion of the routine. This category does not require two batons to be used throughout the entire routine. Choreography may consist of both one baton and two baton sections. The performance is accompanied by music of the contestant’s preference.
Multi-Baton Dance Twirl
A contestant performing a dance twirl using three or more batons during all or any portion of the routine. This category does not require three or more batons to be used throughout the entire routine. It may consist of a varying number of batons per member with three or more batons being used during any portion of the routine. The performance is accompanied by music of the contestant’s preference.

TWIRL SOLO CATEGORIES
Twirl choreography should include baton and bodywork unison. Baton skill, speed and control are the key components with less emphasis on dance. However, proper body form and technique are essential. UIL routines with an emphasis on baton are appropriate for this category.
1 Baton Twirl, 2 Baton Twirl and 3 Baton Twirl Categories: Music will be provided by Twirl Productions Unlimited and will be 125-135 beats per minute. Suggested length of routines for this category is 30 seconds - 2 minutes. Penalties will not be given for slightly exceeding the suggested time limits. Contestants that greatly exceed the time limit may be penalized when scores are given. These categories will be performed in lanes with limited floor space.

*2 Baton Twirl: A contestant performs with two batons for the duration of the routine.
*3 Baton Twirl: A contestant performs with three batons for the duration of the routine.

NOVELTY SHOW TWIRL CATEGORY
A Novelty Show Twirl is a twirl solo with the integration of a prop and is accompanied by music of the contestant’s preference. The performance must include at least one baton but may include multiple batons during any portion of the routine. The routine must include a prop. A prop is anything used during a performance that is not considered to be twirling equipment. Example of props: box, chair, hat, boa, cane, umbrella, etc.

STRUT CATEGORY
Basic Strut - marching in a square pattern with no footwork or legwork while carrying the baton in a traditional position.
T Strut - A lane routine that is performed in a T formation.

DOWNFIELD CATEGORY (High School & Collegiate Only)
A downfield routine is a coordinated combination of twirling variety/body movements while traveling across the floor in step with the music. The performance should be show oriented.
